Inspired by a visit to the W.O. Smith Community Music School in Nashville, Tennessee, former City Councilwoman Mary Cates inspired a group of musicians in Raleigh to start a music school to serve financially challenged families in Wake County.
Opened in October 1994, Community Music School offers private lessons to low-income children who receive instruction and
guidance from professional musicians, and provides instruments
for student use.
Similar schools have played pivotal roles in nurturing some of America's great artistic talents, including clarinetist Benny Goodman, singer Johnny Mathis, dancer Martha Graham and actress Helen Hayes.
Students are selected on the basis of financial need and interest in the program. Each student and parent undergo an interview and orientation process.
Community Music School is committed to providing economically disadvantaged children with an experience and education in
music and the arts. All students enrolled in CMS are from
low-income families in Wake County.
Students are selected on a basis of financial need and interest in the program. A letter from the school system stating the student is approved for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program is required to be eligible for participation in CMS programs.
Enthusiastic community support has been demonstrated for the school through funding from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, the United Arts Council of Wake County, North Carolina Arts Council, the Woman's Club of Raleigh, other supporters of the arts in Wake County.
